George Pruitt

 

George Pruitt grew up with a strong interest in the fine arts and 3 dimensional design. He received a BFA in Dimensional Design from Philadelphia College of Art. He studied under notable designer/craftsmen of the American Crafts movement of the 1950's and 1960's. He continued his education at the School For American Craftsmen at Rochester Institute of Technology, studying under the well known Danish silversmith, Hans Christensen. He received a Master of Fine Arts in Metal Crafts and Jewelry.

George has had a rich and varied career in jewelry design and production, including teaching. He taught metal crafts and jewelry design at Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia. He also taught at the Kilmer Job Corp Training Center in Plainfield, NJ, a federal government program designed to train unskilled and underserved young men from impoverished backgrounds. George taught jewelry trade skills to those young men.

George expanded his skills and knowledge in the field. He created a business of custom jewelry design and jewelry repair for local retailers. He then opened and operated his own retail business in Mystic, CT. Emphasis was on custom designed jewelry.

His interest in jewelry production, led him to Providence, RI. He became a jewelry designer, model-maker and product development specialist. He worked in precious and non-precious metals for several major jewelry manufacturers.

George now creates handcrafted, one-of-kind and limited production pieces in sterling silver at his home studio in Preston, CT. He continues to love the creative process. He utilizes traditional techniques of forging, lost wax casting and hand fabrication. His work reflects clean design of mid-century modern and Scandinavian influence of his early education. His body of work represents and resonates a modern, strong, contemporary look with classic style.
